Can you describe your business?
The Spectacle Maker is an optician’s practice situated in The Showgrounds Retail Park in Omagh. Offering full optical services including eye testing, contact lenses, repairs and an on site glazing lab. Hearing services are also coming soon, offering a wide range of hearing aids. I pride myself on a vast knowledge within the industry that is shown within the practice. I have a large collection of frames in stock with approximately 1,000 on display. The practice is uniquely decorated to give a relaxed feel. A pool table doubles as an impressive display piece. Full disabled access was foremost in the design and construction. The showroom is fully open plan.
Why did you start your own business?
I started The Spectacle Maker to get involved more directly with patient/customer needs. After 32 years in the optical Industry I noticed a decline in proper customer service. I strive to be involved with all customer/patient journeys. From lens selection to choosing the correct frame ensuring the cosmetic look and technical requirements suit the individual. Spectacles can be an investment, so it is essential to choose the right frame and lens combination I also have a large selection of suppliers. This ensures choice is pretty much endless if a particular style or colour is required.
What are the best things about running your own business?
The best part of running my own business is the satisfaction that I have a happy customer / patient. Setting out my own standard. I can choose my own products, frames from all designers and collections and not have this dictated by a High Street company.
What are the main challenges facing the business?
Opening in a town with so many existing similar businesses requires you to be unique and offer something different. With the size and layout of the practice and the huge selection of products I feel I faced this head on and it is working. Building a good relationship with customers is essential for the success of any business. I am two years trading and business is always increasing, so I am doing something right.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Know your business/product. Research the market you will be going into thoroughly. Also look into running costs i.e. rental rates, accountancy fees and solicitor’s fees. These can grow very quickly.
Can you describe your experience of running a business in three words or less?
Stressful, exciting and most rewarding.
